Is Aluminium Fencing Better Than Timber Fencing?

16 March 2020 by Joanna Wellwood

Fencing a property is most commonly chosen for privacy or security – keeping pets and children inside the property and keeping unwanted intruders out. Wooden fences have been a popular fencing option for many years in NZ and continue to be so today. But with many other types of fencing materials now available, how do you decide which is the best for your home?

Wooden fences have many benefits such as:

  • Materials are readily available
  • Easy to install
  • Popular and often cheaper

Wooden fences are a quintessential Kiwi product, but the rustic finish may not be the look you are after for your home and garden. They also weather quickly and require regular maintenance, including ongoing painting or staining, and are prone to warping or cracking over time.

Aluminium fencing is a more modern option than traditional wooden fencing, with finished styles continuing to evolve to meet design demands.

Aluminium fencing benefits include:

  • Modern, sleek, and visually appealing
  • Long-lasting – permanent materials suitable for outdoor use
  • A wide range of powder coat colour finishes available
  • Low maintenance
  • Won’t rot
  • Easy to install

Aluminium is a very strong material that doesn't warp, shrink or crack, even with outdoor exposure, and is used extensively for window joinery, balustrades, and many other products around the home. Aluminium fencing has a life expectancy of at least 20 years (with regular maintenance) and a minimum 10-year warranty for the powder coat finish for long term good looks.

So what is the downside?  It can be more expensive than wooden fencing, but an investment in good quality aluminium fencing will pay off in the long-term, as it lasts longer and requires less maintenance, saving you time and money.
